There’s something deeply comforting about a warm skillet meal that comes together with simple pantry staples.

This ground beef orzo skillet has become one of my go-to dinners when I want something hearty, wholesome, and fast—without sacrificing flavor.

It’s one pot, minimal prep, and packed with savory tomato broth, tender orzo, and greens that melt right in.

Even my picky eaters clean their plates!

Why I Love This Recipe

Comfort food that’s quick and satisfying

Made in one pot—hello, easy cleanup!

Packed with protein, pasta, and greens

Family-friendly and great for leftovers

What You’ll Need (Ingredient Highlights)

Lean Ground Beef – Adds hearty protein and rich flavor.

Orzo Pasta – Cooks right in the broth, soaking up all that goodness.

Diced Tomatoes with Herbs – Adds acidity and depth with built-in seasoning.

Onion & Garlic – The classic flavor base for any great skillet.

Spinach or Greens – Wilt in for color, nutrients, and balance.

Italian Seasoning – A no-fuss way to bring the dish together.

Pro Tips Before You Start

Don’t skip sautéing the onion—it builds a flavorful base.

Use low-sodium broth to better control salt levels.

Stir orzo occasionally so it doesn’t stick to the pan.

If using tougher greens (like kale), cook them a bit longer.

How to Make Ground Beef Orzo Skillet

Step 1: Sauté the Onion

Heat a large skillet over medium heat with olive oil.

Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Add the ground beef to the skillet.

Season with salt and pepper, then cook until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks.

Step 3: Add Garlic and Tomatoes

Stir in the minced garlic and the can of diced tomatoes with herbs.

Let it simmer for 2–3 minutes to build flavor.

Step 4: Cook the Orzo

Pour in the orzo pasta and beef broth.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally so the orzo doesn’t stick.

Step 5: Wilt in the Greens

Once the orzo is tender, add the fresh spinach and Italian seasoning.

Stir until the spinach wilts, about 1 minute.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Serve warm, topped with grated parmesan or fresh herbs if desired.

What to Serve It With

Garlic bread or warm baguette

A crisp green salad with balsamic dressing

Roasted veggies on the side

Grated parmesan and fresh herbs on top

Variations / Substitutions

Swap ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version

Use kale or arugula instead of spinach

Add red pepper flakes or paprika for heat

Sub in quinoa or small pasta shells if you don’t have orzo

Storage & Leftovers

Let cool, then store in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.

Reheat on the stovetop with a splash of broth or water to loosen.

You can also freeze it (without the greens) for up to 2 months.

Add fresh spinach after reheating.

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! It reheats well for meal prep and can be frozen for later.

Can I use brown rice instead of orzo?
You can, but it will take longer to cook and may need extra broth.

Is this recipe gluten-free?
Not with regular orzo, but you can use a gluten-free pasta substitute.

Can I add cheese?
Definitely! Stir in some grated parmesan or top with mozzarella for a cheesy finish.

What if I don’t have canned tomatoes with herbs?
Use regular diced tomatoes and add a pinch of oregano and basil.

Can I double the recipe?
Yes, just make sure your skillet is large enough to handle the volume.

What if I don’t eat beef?
Ground turkey or even plant-based meat works great here!

Final Thoughts

This ground beef orzo skillet is my go-to comfort meal when I want something quick and soul-satisfying.

It hits all the right notes—meaty, saucy, and just enough pasta to make it feel special.

Whether you’re feeding a family or just yourself, this dish delivers big flavor in one cozy pan.
